Rakuten store design alternatives for former Rakuten.com sellers

Rakuten closed its US marketplace, the former Buy.com, in 2020, so a Rakuten store design today means a new store on eBay, Shopify or BigCommerce. Our in-house New Jersey team designs eBay stores and Shopify or BigCommerce websites for former Rakuten sellers, with stock kept in sync and a fixed quote first.

Why it matters

What Rakuten store design alternatives look like today

Rakuten bought Buy.com in 2010 and later renamed it Rakuten.com Shopping. Outside sellers listed their products there, and Rakuten ran the cart and checkout. In July 2020 Rakuten said it would close the marketplace, and Rakuten.com/shop took its last orders on September 15, 2020. The rakuten.com address now belongs to Rakuten Rewards, the cash back site once called Ebates, which has no seller accounts.

A former Rakuten seller has two kinds of places to go next. Marketplaces such as eBay, Walmart and Amazon bring their own buyers and set their own rules. A store on your own domain brings only the buyers you send it, but no marketplace can close it. We design the eBay store and the Shopify or BigCommerce website, bring your catalog across, and connect stock and orders so one sale lowers the count everywhere.

Frannie Kline founded OC Designs Online in 2005. Our family-owned team designed Buy.com and Rakuten.com storefronts to match our clients’ eBay stores, and we have designed eBay, Shopify and BigCommerce stores ever since. SalesChannelHub, the inventory and order software we built, keeps those channels on one stock count.

Rakuten today

What Rakuten still runs and what has closed

Rakuten Group still runs a large business from Tokyo, so search results for “Rakuten” mix shopping, cash back and selling. This is what each part means for a seller, as of October 2026.

Rakuten businessStatusWhat it means for a seller
Rakuten.com Shopping (formerly Buy.com), US Closed; last orders September 15, 2020 There is no US Rakuten marketplace to list on or design for
Rakuten Rewards at rakuten.com (formerly Ebates) Open A cash back site for shoppers. Stores pay Rakuten a commission on the sales it sends them, so it is not a marketplace
Rakuten Advertising Open Rakuten’s affiliate network, which brands with their own website can apply to join as advertisers
Rakuten Ichiba, Japan Open, including to overseas sellers US businesses can apply without a Japanese company, but the shop system is only in Japanese and Rakuten asks for strong Japanese
Rakuten France (formerly PriceMinister) Closed September 30, 2026 Seller and buyer accounts stay readable until November 10, 2026
Rakuten Germany Closed to new orders October 15, 2020 German Rakuten shops and their templates are gone
Rakuten UK, Spain and Austria Closed in 2016 No Rakuten marketplace to sell on in those countries

Where to sell now

Where former Rakuten sellers sell now

Rakuten.com was a general marketplace with many categories, so the closest replacements are the other general marketplaces, plus a store of your own. You can use several of them at once on one stock count.

ChannelA good fit whenWhat we do
eBay You sell across many categories, including parts, collectibles and used or refurbished goods, and want a branded storefront Design your eBay store and listing template, and sync its stock
Walmart Marketplace You are a business with a tax ID and a record of selling online, and want Walmart.com’s shoppers Connect it to the same stock count through SalesChannelHub
Amazon Your products sell in Amazon’s categories and you can work within its rules on branding and buyer contact Connect it through SalesChannelHub, with a website designed for Amazon sellers
Etsy and TikTok Shop You sell handmade, vintage or giftable goods, or products that do well in short videos Connect them through SalesChannelHub
Your own Shopify or BigCommerce store You want buyers’ email addresses and a channel no marketplace can close Design and build the store and bring your catalog across

Cost

What decides the cost of your new stores

Every project gets a fixed quote after a free consultation. A seller who needs one eBay store is a different job from one who wants an eBay store, a website and four synced marketplaces. These are the things that change the price.

What we look atWhy it changes the work
Channels in the project An eBay store alone is the smallest job. An eBay store and a website designed together share one brand, so the second design builds on the first.
Number of page designs A home, collection and product layout is the core of a website. Brand pages, landing pages and a blog each add design and build time.
State of your product data A clean product file or a catalog still held in inventory software imports quickly. Rebuilding listings from old screenshots and supplier sheets takes longer.
How much copy we rewrite Moving products across is quick. A new description for every product takes longer, and gives Google original pages to rank.
The sync SalesChannelHub runs on its own monthly plan. Matching every SKU across channels and testing orders is part of the build.
Custom features Vehicle fitment search, bundles, wholesale pricing or size finders are built and tested on top of the design.

Rebuilding your catalog

How we rebuild a Rakuten catalog on new channels

Your Rakuten seller account closed with the marketplace, so we rebuild the catalog from your own files and software.

  1. Gather what you still have

Product files you once uploaded to Rakuten, exports from the listing or inventory software you used, your own product photos, and your SKUs and UPCs.

  2. Map it to each channel

Each product gets the categories and item details each channel asks for, such as eBay item specifics or Shopify and BigCommerce options. Your SKUs stay the same everywhere, so the sync can match each item.

  3. Design the stores

We design your eBay store and listing template and your website in one brand, and you approve each design before we build it.

  4. Connect stock and orders

We set up SalesChannelHub, match every SKU, place test orders and check that stock counts change on every channel.

  5. Launch and fix old links

We launch, submit your website’s sitemap to Google Search Console, and help you swap old Rakuten storefront links on your social profiles and other pages you control.

What carries over

What you can still use from your Rakuten store

Some of your Rakuten business was yours and some of it closed with the marketplace. This is how we handle each part.

From your Rakuten storeCan you still use it?What we do
Product files you uploaded Yes, if you kept them or your listing software still has them Clean them up and import them into each new channel
Product photos Yes, when you own them Resize them for eBay’s photo uploader and your own store
SKUs and UPCs Yes, they belong to you Keep them so the sync matches each item on every channel
Logo and brand files Yes Use them in the new eBay store and website, or refresh them first
Reviews and seller ratings No; they closed with the marketplace Set up review requests so new orders build reviews of their own
Your Rakuten storefront address No; old Rakuten shop addresses no longer open a store Point old links and profiles to your new store

How our projects work
What happened to Rakuten.com?

Rakuten closed its US marketplace, Rakuten.com/shop, in 2020. It announced the decision in July, and the site took its last orders on September 15, 2020. The rakuten.com address now belongs to Rakuten Rewards, a cash back site for shoppers.

Can I still sell on Rakuten in the US?

Not on a Rakuten marketplace, because none is left in the US. Rakuten Rewards, the cash back site at rakuten.com, earns a commission from the stores it sends shoppers to, and brands with their own website can apply to Rakuten Advertising, Rakuten’s affiliate network. To sell products to US buyers, the usual choices now are eBay, Walmart Marketplace, Amazon and a store of your own.

Is Rakuten still in business?

Yes. Rakuten Group is a large Japanese company. It runs Rakuten Ichiba in Japan, Rakuten Rewards and Rakuten Advertising in the US, and services such as Rakuten Kobo and Rakuten Viki. Its marketplaces in the US, Germany, the UK, Spain and, since September 2026, France have closed.

Can I sell on Rakuten Ichiba from the US?

Rakuten says it accepts sellers from 22 countries, including the US, without a Japanese company, and that other conditions may apply. Its shop system is only in Japanese, and Rakuten asks for strong Japanese for shop pages, customer service and returns, so many overseas sellers hire a Japanese-speaking service partner.

Do you design Rakuten Ichiba shops?

No. Our design work covers eBay stores and Shopify, BigCommerce and WordPress websites. Rakuten Ichiba shop pages are built in Rakuten’s own Japanese-language shop system. Your eBay store and website can still share one logo and set of product photos with an Ichiba shop.

Which marketplace is most like Rakuten.com?

eBay and Walmart Marketplace are the closest. Both are general marketplaces with many categories that outside sellers list on. eBay is open to most sellers and gives you a branded store, while Walmart approves sellers by application and asks for a business tax ID.

How much does it cost?

It depends on how many channels you want, how many page designs your website needs, the state of your product data, how much copy we rewrite and any custom features. After a free consultation we send a fixed quote that doesn’t change once work starts, and there are no monthly design fees.

How long does it take?

An eBay store design takes about three to four weeks, and a custom Shopify or BigCommerce store about six. Designed together, the two run side by side in one project.

Can my eBay store and my website share one design?

Yes. We design both in one brand, with the same logo, colors, photos and policies, so buyers who find you on eBay recognize your website.

How do I keep stock in sync across eBay, Walmart and my website?

Use inventory software that holds one stock count for every channel. SalesChannelHub, which we built, connects eBay, Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, TikTok Shop, Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce, so a sale on one lowers the count on the others.

Should my own store use Shopify or BigCommerce?

Shopify suits most sellers who want a large app store and simple editing. BigCommerce suits large catalogs with many product options and sellers with trade buyers. We design for both, so we can recommend either one.

Do I own the design and code?

Yes. When the project is paid, the design and theme files are yours. You can keep them, back them up or hand them to another developer later.
