BigCommerce store design built around your catalog

BigCommerce store design turns a standard theme into a store built around what you sell: your own page layouts, search that fits how your buyers shop, and sections your team edits in Page Builder. Our in-house New Jersey team designs and builds it, with a fixed quote first.

Why it matters

What BigCommerce store design includes

Every BigCommerce store starts from a theme, and many marketplace themes are built on Cornerstone, BigCommerce’s free base theme. A theme decides how your products are shown, how buyers move from the home page to a category to a product, and which parts of each page your team can change without a developer. A store design project replaces those decisions with ones made for your catalog and your buyers.

Our work covers the parts buyers see and the parts your staff use every day. We design the home, category, product, cart and content pages, build them as a custom Stencil theme, and place Page Builder regions where your team will want to swap banners and promotions. For a parts seller that means fitment search on every page; for a wholesaler, layouts built around customer groups and quote requests.

Frannie Kline founded OC Designs Online in 2005, and our family-owned team has designed online stores ever since. BigCommerce lists us in its Partner Directory as an agency partner, and our programmers have built BigCommerce add-ons of our own, such as a Make/Model/Year search app, a Make an Offer feature and daily deal sections. We can build features like these into your design.

What you get

  • Custom Stencil theme

Designed from scratch for your brand and built on BigCommerce’s own theme framework. BigCommerce hosts it; we maintain the code.

  • Home, category and product templates

Separate layouts for the pages that sell: product pages with room for specs, fitment, videos and reviews, and category pages that help buyers narrow down.

  • Regions you can edit yourself

Page Builder regions in the places you will change most, so you swap banners, sale blocks and featured products yourself.

  • Search and filters that fit your catalog

Filters by brand, size or vehicle, and our Make/Model/Year search for parts stores.

  • B2B-ready layouts

Account pages, quote and bulk-order flows designed for wholesale buyers when you sell B2B.

  • Redesigns and migrations

A new design for your current store, or a move to BigCommerce from Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce or Volusion with every old address redirected.

  • Checked for speed before launch

Images sized for each screen, one clear heading per page and editable page titles, tested against Google’s Core Web Vitals.

  • Support after launch

The same team answers the phone Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 ET, for questions and change requests after launch.

Your options

Premium theme, custom BigCommerce theme or Catalyst

A BigCommerce store gets its look in one of three ways. Each one changes who builds, hosts and edits the storefront (October 2026).

Premium theme from the marketplaceCustom Stencil theme (what we build)Catalyst (headless)
What it is A ready-made theme, usually based on Cornerstone, set up with your logo and colors A theme designed for your brand and catalog, written in BigCommerce’s Stencil framework A separate storefront built with Next.js that talks to BigCommerce through its API
Who hosts it BigCommerce BigCommerce You or your developer, for example on Vercel
Editing without code Page Builder, in the places the theme author allowed Page Builder, in the places we plan with you Makeswift, BigCommerce’s visual editor for Catalyst
How unique it looks Other stores use the same theme Only your store Only your store
Upkeep Updates come from the theme author, and your own changes can break Hosted by BigCommerce; we maintain the theme code Your team maintains and deploys the code
Best for New stores and tight budgets Growing stores that want their own design and editable pages Large brands with developers and very custom shopping flows

Customize or rebuild

BigCommerce theme customization or a new theme?

Plenty of stores do well on a premium theme for years, and sometimes customizing it is the better spend. These are the signs we look for, and what each option can do about them.

What you noticeCustomizing your current themeA new custom theme
The store looks dated, or your brand has changed New colors, fonts and photos on the layout you have A full redesign around the new brand
Product pages can’t show what buyers ask about Possible when the theme’s templates allow it Layouts made for your specs, fitment, size charts and videos
Every new promotion needs a developer Page Builder regions added where you need them Regions planned into every page from the start
Apps have piled up and the store has slowed down Clean up what’s there Features built into clean code, with speed checked before launch
Buyers struggle to find the right product Better menus and filters inside the current layout Navigation planned around how your customers shop, by brand, size, vehicle or use
Wholesale buyers still order by phone Usually limited by the theme Account, quote and bulk-order screens for trade customers
The theme author still releases updates Each update has to be merged with your changes by hand No outside updates to merge; we maintain the code

Cost

What decides the cost of a BigCommerce design

We don’t publish one price, because two stores rarely need the same work. Every store gets a fixed quote after a free consultation, and these are the things that move it up or down.

What we look atWhy it changes the work
Number of page designs A home, category and product layout is the core. Landing pages, brand pages, a blog and custom account pages each add design and build time.
Catalog shape A few hundred simple products need less than thousands of products with variants, custom fields and fitment data.
Search and filtering Brand and size filters come with the platform on some plans. Vehicle fitment or custom finders are extra development.
Custom features Make an Offer, daily deals, bundles, calculators or quote forms are built and tested on top of the theme.
B2B needs Customer-group pricing, quote requests and account dashboards need their own screens.
Moving platforms Migrating products, customers and orders, and mapping every old address to a new one, adds a separate stage.
Apps and integrations Reviews, ERP, shipping or marketplace connections have to be styled and tested inside the design.

Your industry

BigCommerce website design for your industry

We’ve designed BigCommerce stores for marine, automotive, jewelry, home and industrial sellers, and each kind of catalog asks something different of the design.

Store typeWhat the design has to handle
Automotive parts Part numbers on product pages and our Make/Model/Year search, so buyers only see parts that fit their vehicle
Marine electronics Long spec sheets, compatibility notes, manuals and comparison tables that stay readable on a phone
Jewelry Large zoomable photos, metal and size options, and trust details close to the price
Home goods Room photos, swatches, delivery information and bundles on product pages
Industrial and wholesale Customer-group pricing, quote requests, bulk ordering and account pages for trade buyers

Plans

Which BigCommerce plan your design needs

Some design features only work on higher BigCommerce plans, so we check yours before we design around them. BigCommerce renamed its plans on June 1, 2026: Standard, Plus, Pro and Enterprise became Core, Growth, Scale and Performance. The table shows the plans as of October 2026.

Feature that shapes the designCoreGrowthScalePerformance
Customer groups (wholesale pricing, member areas) No Yes Yes Yes
Product filtering (faceted search) No No Yes Yes
Abandoned cart saver No Yes Yes Yes
Google customer reviews No No Yes Yes
Extra storefronts (paid add-on) Up to 3 Up to 5 Up to 8 By agreement

Redesigns

How we redesign a BigCommerce store without losing rankings

A redesign changes how your store looks. Your product addresses, page titles and the content Google already ranks stay where they are, or move with a redirect.

  1. Record what ranks today

We list every product, category and content page that gets traffic, with its address, title and description, before anything changes.

  2. Build on an unpublished theme

Your new theme is built and tested next to your live one in My Themes, so the store keeps selling until launch day.

  3. Keep or redirect every address

If an address has to change, it gets a 301 redirect to its new page through BigCommerce’s redirect manager, which accepts a CSV import.

  4. Check speed before launch

We test the new theme against Google’s Core Web Vitals: the main content in under 2.5 seconds, quick responses to taps, and no layout jumping.

  5. Launch and watch

We publish the theme, resubmit your sitemap, and check Google Search Console in the weeks after launch for errors or lost pages.

Migration

Moving to BigCommerce from Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce or Volusion

BigCommerce gives you tools for moving your data. We handle the design and the redirects, the two parts that decide whether customers and rankings follow you.

Part of the moveHow it movesWhat we do
Products, customers and orders BigCommerce’s free Data Migration app moves up to 500,000 records from Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce and Volusion; larger moves use BigCommerce’s paid migration service or a partner app Plan the categories and product fields the new design needs
Shopify orders Not by CSV: through the app, the API or BigCommerce’s managed service Choose the right route for your order history
Magento pages and blog posts Not moved by the app; they need the API or rebuilding Rebuild them in the new design
Old web addresses BigCommerce’s 301 redirect manager, with CSV import Map every old address to its new page
Design and theme Themes don’t transfer between platforms, so the design starts fresh Design and build your new BigCommerce theme
Typical timeline (BigCommerce’s estimate) 1 to 2 weeks for stores with 500 products or fewer, 3 to 6 weeks for mid-size stores, up to 12 weeks for large ones Run the design alongside the data move

Good questions

Questions about BigCommerce store design

Something else on your mind? Call (609) 675-0912 and a real person answers.

How our projects work
How much does a BigCommerce store design cost?

It depends on how many page designs you need, the size of your catalog, custom features, B2B screens and whether you are moving from another platform. After a free consultation we send a fixed quote that doesn’t change once work starts, and there are no monthly design fees.

How long does a custom BigCommerce theme take?

About six weeks for most stores, from the consultation to launch. Moves from another platform take longer when there is a lot of data or many addresses to redirect.

Can I edit my BigCommerce theme myself after launch?

Yes. Banners, featured products, colors, fonts and new content pages are yours to change in Page Builder, inside the regions we build into each page, and products and prices stay in the BigCommerce control panel as always. New layouts and features need theme code, and we make those changes for you.

Can I change my BigCommerce theme without losing products?

Yes. BigCommerce keeps products, categories, customers and orders separate from the theme, so a new design leaves your catalog in place. Custom code and some Page Builder widgets from the old theme may need rebuilding, and we take care of that.

Should my store use Stencil or Catalyst?

Most stores are better served by Stencil: BigCommerce hosts and maintains it, and you edit pages in Page Builder. Catalyst gives full control of the storefront, but your team hosts and maintains the code, so it suits large brands with their own developers. We design and build Stencil themes, and if your store really needs Catalyst, we tell you in the consultation.

Does BigCommerce charge transaction fees?

Orders paid through payment providers built into BigCommerce, such as PayPal and Stripe, carry no BigCommerce fee. Other providers carry a fee that depends on your plan. BigCommerce’s pricing page has the current figures.

Is BigCommerce good for SEO?

Yes. You control page titles, descriptions and web addresses, robots.txt and 301 redirects, and BigCommerce builds your sitemap. The theme decides the rest, such as headings, page speed and how products link to each other, and we build those in.

Is BigCommerce better than Shopify?

It depends on what you sell. BigCommerce includes customer groups and offers B2B Edition, which helps if you sell to trade buyers. We design for both BigCommerce and Shopify, so we can tell you which suits your products.

Can you design for BigCommerce B2B Edition?

Yes. B2B Edition adds company accounts, buyer roles, quotes and invoices for purchase orders. We design the account, quote and bulk-order screens so they match the rest of your store.

Will BigCommerce support help with my custom theme?

BigCommerce support helps with Page Builder and themes from its marketplace, but its agents don’t edit theme code. For a custom theme, that support comes from us, the team that built it.

Do you work with stores outside New Jersey?

Yes. Our team is in New Jersey, and we work with store owners across the US and abroad by phone, email and screen share.

Do I own the theme code?

Yes. When the project is paid, the theme files are yours. You can keep them on your store, back them up or hand them to another developer later.

Is BigCommerce now called Commerce?

The company changed its name to Commerce.com on July 31, 2025. The store platform is still called BigCommerce, and so are its plans, apps and Partner Directory.

What do you need from me?

Access to your BigCommerce store (or a trial store if you are moving), your logo and brand files, and your answers to our questionnaire.
